April 07, 2005
NEW BRUNSWICK/PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers Stadium, which seats more than 41,000, will be the site for the Sunday, Sept. 25, public appearance by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, who is scheduled to speak on “Peace, War and Reconciliation” at 10:30 a.m.
In conjunction with His Holiness’ visit, Rutgers is coordinating supporting activities ranging from lectures to special academic courses and cultural programs that focus on themes related to conflict and moral obligation.
The first student-organized event related to the Dalai Lama’s visit will be “A Day of Peace at Rutgers” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at Brower Commons on the College Avenue campus. Sponsored by the Rutgers Religion Students Association, the event will include a feature presentation from a Buddhist nun who will address issues of violence, war and world peace. Remarks also will be given by advocacy groups, among them, Military Families Speak Out and the Coalition for Peace Action.
Other programs planned include “Rutgers Reads the Dalai Lama,” a university-wide reading club that will analyze the Dalai Lama’s book, “Ethics for the New Millennium.” The book discussion, facilitated by the Episcopal Campus Ministry at Rutgers, will be open to the general public.
