Hundreds of Rutgers students, including Joshua Fleurant, (top) rallied April 27 in Trenton against the proposed state budget, which contains significant cuts to higher education.

At lower right, U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, second from left, meets with Rutgers students, left to right, Christopher John, Rachel Marcus, Jim Boyd and Nicole Guanlao. Vice President for Student Affairs Gregory Blimling is center. The students traveled to Washington, D.C., accompanied by President Richard L. McCormick, April 26, to advocate for the restoration of need-based aid programs in the proposed federal budget.

Take Action Now

The proposed budget for the 2007 fiscal year, combined with mandatory increases for such costs as fuel and utilities, would leave Rutgers with an estimated $114 million shortfall. The university is looking closely at cost-cutting measures, but the proposed cuts to state funding would force a large increase in tuition, the cancellation of hundreds of classes, extensive layoffs and reductions in the research and service activities that are part of Rutgers’ mandate to the state and that drive economic growth in New Jersey.

Contact your state legislators and let them know why adequate funding for
Rutgers is crucial to Rutgers students, Rutgers families, New Jersey residents and the state’s future.

The most effective outreach is by meeting with legislators in their district offices, but phone calls and written messages are also helpful.

Go to www.rutgers.edu/FY2007budget for additional information and easy-to-use tools for contacting your state representative.
