Columbia University’s Center for Contemporary Black History and the U.S. Postal Service has unveiled a stamp honoring Rutgers and Columbia alumnus Paul L. Robeson (1898–1976).
The stamp, which will become available in January, is the 27th in the postal service’s Black Heritage series, which recognizes the achievements of prominent African Americans.
Robeson — athlete, actor, singer, author and civil rights activist— was one of Rutgers’ most famous and accomplished alumni, graduating in 1919 after a brilliant academic and athletic career. A 1923 graduate of Columbia Law School, he received an honorary master of arts degree from Rutgers in 1932 and an honorary doctorate of humane letters in 1973.
In early February, the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service and the Kilmer General Mail Facility, will hold a series of activities in celebration of the stamp’s debut.
