Remembering Rona Goffen, distinguished art historian and professor

Rona Goffen, noted art historian and Board of Governors Professor at Rutgers, died Sept. 8 after a long illness. She was 60 and lived in Princeton.
Goffen’s enthusiasm and expertise in the Renaissance inspired all who knew her. Her innovative scholarship paid careful attention to the social and economic context surrounding artists. The author of several acclaimed books, her most recent included “Titian’s Women” and “Renaissance Rivals: Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, Titian” (both published by Yale University Press).
Goffen was born in Brooklyn in 1944 and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1966. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1974. After teaching at Indiana University and Princeton University, she spent a decade at Duke University, serving as head of the art history department for three years before moving to Rutgers.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Kirkpatrick Chapel on Old Queens campus. A reception will follow at Winants Hall.
