Paula Tallal, co-director of the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience, and four co-inventors were awarded the 2000 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in the consumer category by the Research and Development Council of New Jersey. The award recognizes the scientists' patents that led to the development of a new computerized program that improves language and reading skills.
Anthony Artuso, assistant professor, and Carl Pray, professor, both in the agricultural food and resource economics department, and Margaret Brennan, research analyst in the Cook/NJAES Office of Research, have received $868,516 for a project on "Innovation and Dynamic Efficiency in Agricultural Biotechnology."
Janice M. Ballou, director of the Center for Public Interest Polling at the Eagleton Institute of Politics, has been elected standards chair of the American Association for Public Opinion Research. As chair, she is responsible for assessing alleged violations in the practices of survey research organizations.
Norma Basch, professor of history in Newark, has been awarded the Scribes Book Award of the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects for her book "Framing American Divorce."
Haym Benaroya, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Myra Bluebond-Langner, professor of anthropology in Camden, has received a $100,000 grant from the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation to support her research project titled "Decision Making When Cure is Not Likely in Children with Cancer."
Frances Bouchoux, associate dean for admissions, career services and institutional planning at the School of Law–Newark, has been appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court's Committee on Women in the Courts.
Charlotte Bunch, executive director of the Center for Women's Global Leadership, received a "Women Who Make a Difference Award" for public service from the National Council for Research on Women. Bunch, who is also a professor at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, was one of four women honored by the council at its third annual awards dinner held at the United Nations.
Bill Glovin, senior editor of Rutgers Magazine, received three second-place awards from the New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in the magazine/newsletter/Internet category for his stories "The Legacy of Jimmy V," "Bat Out of Hell," and a profile of Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Tyler Hoffman, assistant professor of English in Camden, has been named associate editor of the Robert Frost Review.
Gov. Christie Whitman has appointed Arnold G. Hyndman, dean of Livingston College, as the newest member of the New Jersey State Board of Education.
Lucille Joel, professor at the College of Nursing, has been inducted into the Seton Hall University College of Nursing Hall of Honor.
Armen G. Khachaturyan, State of New Jersey Professor of Mechanics and Materials Science, has been selected to receive the William Hume-Rothery Award presented by the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society for his exceptional scholarly contributions to the science of alloys.
Sean Liu, assistant professor of food science at Cook College, has received a $77,000 one-year research grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the project "Pervaporation Model Modification and Verification."
Benjamin Melamed, professor of management science and information systems, and Tayfur Altiok, professor of industrial engineering at the School of Engineering, along with Yorai Wardi of Georgia Tech, received a $150,000 NSF grant to study transportation of bulk coal over distribution networks.
Marisa Pierson, project manager, and Peter Troost, field producer, with the Department of University Relations' Office of Print and Electronic Communications received a first prize from the New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in the category of radio features for their story "Lucy, the Margate Elephant," part of the New Jerseytimes radio series.
