Joseph J. Seneca, university vice president for academic affairs, was honored as Educator of the Year when the Research & Development Council of New Jersey held its annual awards dinner at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City Nov. 7.
Seneca, who has been at Rutgers since 1967, has taught at all levels of instruction, served as chair of Rutgers' economics department and holds a wide range of other positions, including chair of the New Jersey Council of Economic Advisors. Since 1991, Seneca has served as Rutgers' chief academic officer, responsible for overseeing and coordinating all academic policies and programs.
"I have worked with Joe Seneca throughout his 35-year career at Rutgers, and the New Jersey R&D Council could not have made a better choice for Educator of the Year," said acting President Norman Samuels. "This is a great tribute to Joe and a source of pride for the entire university community."
Jerry A. Fodor, State of New Jersey Professor of Philosophy and a member of the Center for Cognitive Science, has been named a fellow of the Cognitive Science Society Inc.
The society, founded in 1979 and comprising about 1,000 members worldwide, brings together researchers from many fields who hold the common goal of understanding the nature of the human mind. Fellows are chosen for their significant contributions to theory and practice in the field, as well as for their professional integrity.
Fodor's areas of expertise include problems about the nature of linguistic and conceptual content or meaning, and about how problems in the philosophy of mind interact with problems in the philosophy of language.
