Three Edison middle school students who sold cupcakes and lemonade to raise money for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks donated $250 to Rutgers. The money will go toward the university's September 11th Memorial Scholarships, which will provide full-tuition undergraduate scholarships to victims' children admitted to Rutgers.
The three sixth-graders at Herbert Hoover Middle School - Kelsey Mahan, Lauren Spath and Alyssa Wakefield - delivered their contribution to President Francis L. Lawrence Nov. 15.
"At first we thought of giving money to the Red Cross, but when my mom read about the Rutgers scholarships in the paper, we knew we could give our money to people right here in the state who need it," Lauren said.
"All of us at Rutgers are touched by the generosity exhibited by these three middle school students," said Lawrence. "They demonstrate that our future remains bright and will be in the hands of individuals who care for others and not just themselves."
