Leslie Fehrenbach named secretary of the boards

Archived article from Oct 20, 2003

By Mark Maben

Leslie Fehrenbach has been named secretary of the governing boards of Rutgers. Her appointment as secretary of the board of trustees was ratified Oct. 16 during a meeting of the Rutgers Board of Trustees. The board of governors approved Fehrenbach’s appointment as secretary of the board of governors Sept. 12.

Fehrenbach, who has worked at Rutgers for 14 years, was the university’s associate vice president for administration until she began her service as secretary to the boards Sept. 15. For administrative purposes, she reports to Karen Kavanagh, executive vice president for administrative affairs.

Fehrenbach’s primary responsibilities will be to support the activities of Rutgers’ board of governors and board of trustees. Among her duties will be maintaining university regulations and board policies, providing advice on board issues to the university president and executive administration, and serving as liaison between the board and the university administration. In addition, in consultation with university counsel, she will ensure that board actions are in compliance with legal requirements. She also will oversee the university’s annual commencement activities and chair the committee on plaques and monuments, as well as Rutgers’ compliance with the public access to government records law, a responsibility she has held since the law became effective July 1, 2002.

Fehrenbach replaces Mildred R. Schildkamp, who retired at the end of June as university secretary and assistant to the president. In July, President Richard L. McCormick announced that some of Schildkamp’s duties would be reassigned for greater efficiency. Debra Norman was named secretary for the corporation, responsible for signing official documents, receiving legal notices and keeping the university seal. Carol Koncsol, executive assistant to the president, assumed Schildkamp’s functions that supported the president’s office.

“I am extremely pleased that Leslie has accepted this position,” said Kavanagh. “She possesses the right combination of knowledge of Rutgers, management skill, innovative thinking and results orientation. She is the right fit for this position.”

Fehrenbach began her career at Rutgers in 1989 as assistant vice president for campus safety. She served as associate vice president for administration and public safety beginning in 1995 and was appointed associate vice president for administration in 2002. Prior to coming to Rutgers, she was an administrator at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Fehrenbach brings to the position more than 20 years experience in managing administrative, business and campus services. Throughout her career, she has developed a reputation for being service-oriented and results focused, as well as an ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and other university constituents.

A resident of East Brunswick, Frehenbach holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from The College of New Jersey.
