--By next September, interior wiring should be completed in 50 residence halls and 33 academic and administrative buildings as part of RUNet 2000, a project to put in place a comprehensive, advanced communications infrastructure for data, video and voice.

--As part of the Year of the Network initiative, Internet and other learning technologies are being incorporated into 17 undergraduate courses taught by five academic departments in New Brunswick to 8,400 Rutgers students.

--Sponsored research has nearly doubled over the last decade, up almost $20 million -- or 13 percent -- over last year. Corporate fund raising is up $1.6 million (9.8 percent) over last year, and foundation and other support is up $10 million, or more than 35 percent, over last year.

--Enhanced state and federal relations led to increased support of SROA projects; a 3.5 percent increase in Rutgers' overall state appropriation supplemented by some direct appropriations; a $550 million statewide higher education Capital Improvement Fund, which will bring $169 million to Rutgers; and possible Grant Incentive Funding, which is intended to provide a state cost share for private giving.

--Private fund raising more than doubled since 1990 to $60.6 million.

"These factors will bring us success in achieving the funding necessary to fully implement the strategic plan," Lawrence concluded. "Every element of our university community has contributed to our success so far and will be key as we continue to move forward."

Building on the past Excerpt from President Lawrence's address to the University Senate

"The flow of history, the progression from Rutgers' origin as one of the first institutions of higher education in America to our modern status as a great state research university, offers us a sense of perspective that is a strong anchor for the work each of us does. Having a sense of our history also means celebrating the contributions to the identity and stature of Rutgers that have been made by thousands of people, from those who founded the original college to those who will graduate early in the new century.

"We at Rutgers are in a select group of institutions that can measure their impact over centuries and have formulated the basis for American higher education. We have a special responsibility to preserve the values we treasure and to see that those traditions are maintained through the curricula of the modern colleges and universities we have become.

"The intersection of our historic traditions with our daily focus on the present and the future represents a chance for us to re-examine our progress toward meeting our goals as a university. As we enter the first decade of the new century -- the decade in which we will meet the long-range goals we have set for ourselves -- each of us must have a thorough understanding of how the ideals and actions of each and every one of us contribute to the mission of the university."
