Unveiling a portrait of the late Professor John Koenig, chair of ceramic engineering from 1946 through 1964, are (from left) Stephen Danforth, current chair of the department, now known as materials science and engineering; John Yaniero, the department’s senior laboratory manager; and Koenig’s son, John. Highlights of Koenig’s leadership included expanding the school of ceramics, as the department was then known, to accommodate the return of World War II veterans, establishing significant sources of industrial research funding ($250,000 by 1952), and securing a 27-year research contract in electronic ceramics from the U. S. Army. He also held leadership roles in national engineering societies. Koenig’s portrait, unveiled Friday during the annual Malcolm G. McLaren Distinguished Lecture Symposium, will go on display in the Center for Ceramics Research building.
