Former Gov. Thomas H. Kean, chair of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and its nonprofit successor, the 9/11 Public Discourse Project, will address the Class of 2006 at the 240th commencement May 17. President Richard L. McCormick will confer an estimated 11,269 degrees during 1:30 p.m. ceremonies on Voorhees Mall, the historic heart of College Avenue campus. As governor from 1982 to 1990, Kean was rated among America’s most effective state leaders by Newsweek magazine. He was noted for his tax cuts that spurred 750,000 new jobs, a federally replicated welfare reform program, landmark environmental policies and more than 30 education reforms. He was elected for a second term by the largest margin in New Jersey history. Kean was president of Drew University from 1990 to 2005. During his tenure, he focused on shaping Drew into one of the nation’s leading small liberal arts universities. He is board chair of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest health philanthropy, and chair of the Newark Alliance and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Kean was the 2005 Clifford P. Case Professor of Public Affairs at Rutgers. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College.
