To honor the memory of the late associate director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, Gov. Christie Whitman and the New Jersey Legislature have established the Henry J. Raimondo Legislative Fellows Program. In addition, the institute has announced the first class of eight Raimondo Legislative Fellows.
Raimondo, a professor of public policy at Eagleton and the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, died of a heart attack while jogging near his home in Bayonne in February 1999. He was 51.
Eight fellowships will be awarded annually to Rutgers graduate students interested in learning about and participating in state government and the New Jersey legislative process. Students enrolled in graduate and professional programs in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden are eligible to apply. The one-year fellowships provide a $7,500 stipend plus tuition and fees, and are supported by the Legislature and Rutgers.
Raimondo Fellows will study the state legislative process during four workshops and a field trip to Trenton during the fall. They will spend the spring semester as interns in the Legislature, complementing their academic study with hands-on, practical experience in state government. One will serve in each of the Senate and Assembly Majority and Minority offices, while four will intern in the Office of Legislative Services.
Fellows will enroll for three credits of independent study in their respective disciplines and will work with an appropriate adviser, strengthening the relationship between their internship experience and chosen field of academic study. They also will meet regularly with Eagleton Institute Associate Director John Weingart, who directs the Raimondo Legislative Fellows Program.
