Industrial and systems engineering students, left to right, Charles Berntson, Adeel Fudda, Marsha Handeli and David Baum made an ordinary washing machine smart by outfitting it with electronics that track the machine’s maintenance needs and place service calls. The smart washing machine was one of five projects that the senior industrial engineering class undertook to combine their knowledge of physics, systems design, materials properties and manufacturing processes and come up with solutions to real-world problems. They demonstrated their projects to fellow classmates, faculty and industry representatives last week in the department’s seventh annual design of engineering systems presentation, led by professors E. A. Elsayed and B. Basily. The program serves as both a learning tool for graduating seniors and a talent search for companies looking for new industrial engineers. Other projects included an automated garage that parks your car with no human intervention and a virtual picture window that lets homeowners replace views of their neighbors’ houses with idyllic scenery.
