The annual Rutgers Dance Marathon featuring local bands, dee-jays and hundreds of dancers and volunteers steps off at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 1, and winds up at
6 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at the College Avenue Gym. Proceeds benefit the Institute for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders, which serves the needs of families facing serious illness.
Members of the 2005 Rutgers Dance Marathon executive committee hold up placards showing the amount of money raised at last year’s dance. To date, marathons have contributed more than $800,000 to the institute, which has named one floor of its Somerset Street headquarters in honor of the Rutgers Dance Marathon. The marathon, which traces its Rutgers roots back to a 1971 benefit hosted by one Greek-letter organization, has evolved into the largest student-run philanthropy in the state.
