The university has received honors from two groups representing New Jersey’s high-tech businesses.
The New Jersey Technology Council gave Rutgers its “Excellence in Technology Education Award” for preparing students to pursue careers in New Jersey’s growing technology industry and for working with businesses to transfer research innovations into commercial products.
Another group, the Research and Development Council of New Jersey, cited Rutgers for developing a novel optical fiber to transmit high-powered laser light. Invented by Professor James Harrington of ceramic and materials engineering, the thin, highly flexible and low-cost hollow glass fiber transmits high-energy laser light in surgical instruments.
