Steven J. Diner was back in the classroom last month, but this time in a high school freshman honors English class. Diner, who spent years teaching college history students, guest-taught at Newark’s Shabazz High School as part of Teach for America Week. His lesson examined the history of immigration to America, including how early and discriminatory laws favored immigration from certain European nations until regulations were changed in the 1960s.
