At the Senate

The University Senate took the following actions at its Oct. 21 meeting:
Senate endorses draft university copyright policy; Gaunt thanked for work The revised policy clarifies who can assert copyright over works created in the Rutgers community, whether a student, faculty or staff member, teaching or graduate assistant, outside consultants or Rutgers. University Librarian Marianne Gaunt headed the task force that worked on the policy for several years. The policy is posted at senate.rutgers.edu/copyrightpolicy.pdf.
Resolution urging Rutgers public statement on FAIR v. Rumsfeld The senate adopted a resolution urging the president and board of governors to make a public statement in support of the Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights in the case FAIR v. Rumsfeld. FAIR is challenging the Solomon Amendment, which denies federal funds to institutions that prohibit military recruiters. But the university’s non-discrimination policy goes against the military practice of discriminatory hiring practices based on sexual orientation. The Rutgers Gay and Lesbian Caucus and three students from the School of Law-Newark have joined FAIR as plaintiffs.
Student representative to BOG should have voting power The senate recommended that the president and the board of governors explore the possibility of adding a voting student representative to the board of governors and work with the senate toward accomplishing that end. Senators pointed out that at Rutgers, the board of governors is equivalent to the board of trustees at most New Jersey colleges, and New Jersey statute calls for trustee boards at every state college to provide for the election of voting student representatives.
