Artists and the Book, an exhibition of collagraphs, woodcuts and artists' books by John Ross and Clare Romano, will be on display at the Alexander Library's Gallery '50 and Special Collections and University Archives Gallery until Feb. 1.
Clare Romano spent many years teaching in the printmaking program at Pratt Institute. Previously, she worked for the Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer, one of the most influential designers in America at mid-century, and began making lithographs at what is now the legendary Robert Blackburn Studio in New York. She has illustrated many books of poetry, including Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" and Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River Anthology," as well as books of philosophy and mythology.
John Ross attended Parsons School of Design and the Cooper Union School of Art, studied at the New School for Social Research, and became a professor at Manhattanville College. Since 1962 he has had 67 one-person exhibitions and his work has been seen in innumerable group shows. He has received MacDowell Colony fellowships, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Louis Comfort Tiffany award and many other prizes.
Ross and Romano have authored a series of books on how to make prints, beginning with "The Complete Printmaker" in 1972 and culminating with "The Complete Collagraph" in 1980.
Artists and the Book is open during regular library hours. For more information, call ext. 2-7006. A satellite exhibit of the work of these two artists is running simultaneously at the Dana Library in Newark.
