The Rutgers Academic Challenge, a scholastic competition launched statewide a year ago, is seeking volunteers to serve as judges and proctors for the second annual competition, which will take place on all three Rutgers campuses.
The volunteers will provide assistance at regional tournaments Saturday, Feb. 5, on the Douglass campus; Saturday, Feb. 26, on the Camden campus; and Saturday, March 11, on the Newark campus. Judges and proctors will also be needed for the regional semifinals Saturday, March 25, on the Busch campus.
Judges should have expertise in mathematics, science, technology or the humanities. Serving as volunteers will give them the opportunity to meet and interact with other professionals in their field. Proctors will be responsible for giving team assignments, keeping time and maintaining the integrity of the competition. They will serve as the front-line contact with the high school teams.
In its inaugural year, more than 350 volunteers -- state legislators, corporate and nonprofit leaders, New Jersey Department of Education personnel, and Rutgers faculty and staff -- served as judges and proctors. More than 800 students on nearly 100 teams came to Rutgers to participate in the competition.
The contest, created with help from some 100 teachers in New Jersey's 21 counties, was won by John P. Stevens High School. As the state champion, Stevens received the President's Cup and awards of $1,000 to the school and $1,000 to each member of the team. Again this year, the regional finals and the state championship will be broad-cast on NJN Public Television.
