Academic Challenge needs volunteers

Archived article from Dec 8, 2000

By Ruby Keise

Volunteers are needed for the annual Rutgers Academic Challenge, the statewide scholastic competition for high school students launched by the university three years ago. The volunteers will serve as judges and proctors, providing assistance at the central regional tourney Sunday, Feb. 4, on the College Avenue campus; the northern tourney Saturday, Feb. 24, on the Newark campus; and the southern competition Saturday, March 3, on the Camden campus. Judges and proctors will also be needed for the regional semifinals Sunday, March 25, on the Busch campus.

Judges should have expertise in mathematics, science or the humanities. Proctors will be responsible for giving team assignments, keeping time and maintaining the integrity of the competition.

This year, a dessert reception has been added to each tournament. The reception will give Challenge volunteers and staff an opportunity to mingle with competitors and their advisers. "This will be a time to ask and answer questions about the competition activities, and represent the university to an outstanding group of potential Rutgers students," said Linda Bassett, associate director of university programming in the Office of Print and Electronic Communications.

Teams from 120 schools, including defending champion Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River, will compete. Forty-two schools will participate in both the central and northern tournaments, and 36 will face off in the southern region. The first-place winner in the state championship will receive the President's Cup and awards of $1,000 to the school and $1,000 to each member of the high school team. Second- and third-place winners also will receive team and individual awards.

Volunteers can complete the registration form at www.challenge.rutgers.edu. For more information, call Gabrielle Warren at ext. 5-3710 x 109 or send e-mail to Challenge@ur.rutgers.edu.
