Rutgers University Police Department Sgt. Matthew Gulsby will join hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the country in the 10th annual Police Unity Tour. “The Ride for Those Who Died” raises funds to support the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., and honors those officers who have fallen in the line of duty.
The 300-plus mile trip starts in Florham Park – the birthplace of the tour – May 9. The riders make their way to Ground Zero in lower Manhattan and then leave for the nation’s capital, arriving at the memorial Friday, May 12. The cyclists raise funds by obtaining sponsors for their ride. Since the Police Unity Tour was founded in 1997, it has donated more than $2 million to the memorial fund.
Gulsby is a 13-year veteran of the RUPD, and this is his second consecutive Unity Tour. This year, he’s riding in remembrance of a sheriff’s officer from York County, Pa., who died of a heart attack while on duty.
“When you ride into D.C. and see the family members who lost their loved ones waiting and cheering for you, it’s an amazing thing,” Gulsby said. “That’s when you see how much this means to them and how really important this is.”
RUPD Chief Rhonda Harris said the department is proud of Gulsby’s participation in the Police Unity Tour. “The tour and the memorial have touched Matthew deeply,” she said.
“He brings that passion and dedication back with him to the department to share with
his colleagues.”
