A physics demonstration for kids of all ages

Archived article from Dec 8, 2000

By Joseph Blumberg

The department of physics and astronomy will present a children's Christmas physics demonstration and lecture by Professor Mark Croft and physics support specialist Dave Maiullo Saturday, Dec. 30. The event is free and open to the public.

The holiday event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Physics Lecture Hall (next to the Serin Physics Lab building) on the Busch campus.

Billed as a show for children between the ages of 5 and 110, the event follows the tradition of the Children's Christmas Lectures at London's Royal Institution established by the eminent physicist Michael Faraday in 1826. Faraday's goal was to communicate to children the excitement of scientific discovery during a season of joy and celebration.

"The demonstrations we present are routinely used in our physics courses," Croft said. "They were designed not just to inform students but with an eye toward humor and exciting the imagination. The object of the show is to emphasize the fun in science." The show will include exploding hydrogen balloons, a man lying on a bed of nails and the use of a fire extinguisher to propel a person in a chair across the room.
