A growing giving program

Three years ago, the secretaries of the undergraduate psychology office on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus started a holiday tradition: selecting a charity to bring the holiday spirit to its clients. This year they chose the Eric B. Chandler Health Center, which provides medical services for needy families in the New Brunswick area. The group set up a giving tree in Tillett Hall on Livingston campus with Christmas tags bearing the name, age and size of 90 men, women and children, the information provided by the center. Faculty, staff and graduate students pulled tags and purchased gifts, which will be delivered to the Chandler Center Dec. 15. “The show of support from other departments within the university has been overwhelming,” said Cremilde Roman, principal secretary in the psychology department. Other participating departments include American studies, Latino and Hispanic Caribbean studies, Dining Services, the Livingston Learning Resource Center, Graduate Admissions, Rutgers College Counseling Center, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and the Tillett Hall Post Office. In addition, Psi Chi, the psychology honor society, initiated a toy collection for the children of the Chandler center. Last year, the department selected Women Aware, a nonprofit women’s shelter in New Brunswick, and, in 2003, the Ozanam Shelter for the Homeless in Piscataway.
