Kirkpatrick Chapel filled to capacity March 9 as friends, family members and colleagues of Dr. Richard P. McCormick gathered to memorialize the man widely known as “Mr. Rutgers.” McCormick, father of the current Rutgers president, passed away Jan. 16, at age 89. The Rutgers flag outside Old Queen’s flew at half-staff in his honor.
Dr. McCormick’s career at Rutgers spans back to 1934, when he enrolled as an undergraduate and went on to become a prominent figure in the study of American, New Jersey and political history.
“This happy world has suffered its first loss with Dick McCormick’s passing,” said McCormick colleague and brother-in-law John A. Munroe. Munroe, McCormick and their wives vacationed in a farmhouse on Cape Cod for two summers and remained friends for decades, eventually buying their own summer homes in Massachusetts.
President Richard L. McCormick said that his father and mother, Katheryne C. McCormick, were “the luckiest couple.” The last time the president saw his father, “the last thing on his now receding mind was who would take care of her when he was gone,” McCormick said. A montage of family photos showed father and son reading together and gathering around the Christmas tree. “We never had a major fight,” the younger McCormick said. “I idolized him and he knew it.”
