Ronn Friedlander
B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and Ecology and Natural Resources, School of Engineering and School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, New Brunswick
Hometown: Cranford, New Jersey

Midway through his Rutgers career, Ronn Friedlander decided to hit the road and travel the world. He ate fried tarantulas in Cambodia, stayed with a Hmong family in China, and hiked through the jungles of Borneo. Now, with his international perspective and his enthusiasm for biomedical engineering, Ronn wants “to do something related to improving the condition of people in developing countries.”

Already he’s making a difference by participating in the Rutgers chapter of Engineers Without Borders. Ronn traveled to El Salvador to work on a Rutgers-initiated project to build a bridge spanning a creek; without the bridge, kids from a small village can’t attend school during the rainy season. Next up? As Rutgers’ first Whitaker International Fellow, Ronn will be spending a year at Cambridge University. And then, with funding from a National Science Foundation fellowship, Ronn will be studying medical engineering and medical physics in a joint Harvard-MIT Ph.D. program, where he plans to design devices to diagnose diseases in remote locations.
