Janine White
B.A. in History and German, Rutgers College, New Brunswick
Hometown: Madison, New Jersey

When Janine White traveled to Germany with Rutgers Study Abroad, she decided to explore a wrenching historical moment—the dislocation of ethnic Germans from other European countries after World War II. Janine’s grandparents, now living in Germany, were among the refugees, and Janine interviewed them for her thesis. Back on campus, Janine immersed herself in the rigors of research. “I really enjoyed the process, and now I think this is what I want to do with my life,” says Janine.

But Rutgers has meant far more than research to Janine. With Global PACT, a Rutgers-affiliated activism training program, she traveled to Croatia, working alongside students from around the Balkans. And she still found time to travel to West Virginia to build homes as part of an “alternative spring break.” Next up? Janine, who is fluent in German, plans to live in Germany and then pursue a Ph.D.
