The Rutgers University Queens Guard prepared to march at the head of the academic procession as the festivities got underway. The university mace, a staff symbolizing the president’s authority, preceded President Richard L. McCormick during the academic procession. The class of 2008 marched in the procession of Rutgers’ 242nd anniversary commencement ceremony. President Richard L. McCormick urged the graduates to savor this well-deserved moment of accomplishment in their lives.




Melanie A. Spero, a Cook College/School of Environmental and Biological Sciences senior, delivered the undergraduate address. Gwen Ifill, one of the nation’s preeminent broadcast journalists, delivered the commencement address. Adeola Olabisi, Katherine Nolen, and Alejandro Nino (left to right) listened to the commencement address. President Richard L. McCormick congratulated Arthur Congdon and his assistant, Shannon Knight, after Congdon’s doctoral degree from the Graduate School–New Brunswick was conferred.Musical interludes during the ceremony were provided by the Rutgers University Glee Club. President Richard L. McCormick congratulated Wajdi Kanj, one of this year’s 10,852 graduates. Jodie McDonnell and daughter Hannah shared a tender moment after the university 

commencement ceremony.
